DAY BY DAY
Your journey, one considered day at a time.
- DAY 01
Chandigarh to Narkanda
Leave Chandigarh early and climb through the Shimla hills to Narkanda. A short orchard walk loosens up after the drive.
- DAY 02
Sutlej Valley to Kalpa
Follow the Sutlej valley to Kalpa with stops timed around road conditions. Sunset frames Kinnaur Kailash from the village ridge.
- DAY 03
Nako and transfer to Kaza
Enter the trans-Himalayan landscape via Nako and Sumdo permits, reaching Kaza by evening after the route’s longest driving day.
- DAY 04
Ki and Kibber acclimatisation day
Acclimatisation day around Kaza: Ki Monastery, Kibber village and a slow village lunch. Strenuous activity is deliberately avoided.
- DAY 05
Langza, Hikkim and Komic
Explore Langza’s fossil landscape, Hikkim and Komic with respectful village visits and short walks rather than rushed photo stops.
- DAY 06
Kunzum La and Chandratal
Cross Kunzum La when open and continue to Chandratal camp. Walk the final lake approach slowly, with warm drinks ready on return.
- DAY 07
Descent to Manali
Descend across the rough Gramphu track to Manali. River crossings and road work can extend the day, so no evening connection is advised.
- DAY 08 · FINAL DAY
Departure from Manali
Trip closes after breakfast in Manali. Add a recovery night or private transfer to Chandigarh through the planner.
WHY THIS ROUTE WORKS
Designed around time, not a checklist.
The lower-Himachal approach gains altitude gradually through Sangla and Nako before Kaza. This is slower than driving straight from Manali, but it gives the body more time to adjust and makes the landscape change part of the journey.
Chandratal and high passes are seasonal. Early or late departures use a safer return route when road agencies or the trip captain judge the crossing unsuitable.
SIGNATURE EXPERIENCES
The moments that give the journey its character.
Road journey with context
The captain explains changing geology, river systems and border-region life instead of treating the long drives as dead time.
Monasteries as living places
Visits respect prayer schedules and community rules, with time to understand art, learning and daily practice.
Village homestay
A simple local night brings regional food and conversation; comfort expectations and facilities are explained in advance.
Night sky responsibly
Low-light viewing is weather-dependent and avoids loud group activity near homes, farms or wildlife habitat.

Changes, cancellation and disruption

Useful detail, stated honestly.
Altitude
Kaza is around 3,650 metres. This trip is not a substitute for medical advice; disclose health conditions and obtain a clinician’s guidance when appropriate.
Road season
The full circuit is usually possible only after high passes open. Landslides, snow and road work can change the route at short notice.
Connectivity
Mobile data and ATMs are unreliable beyond larger towns. Carry cash, offline documents and emergency contacts.
Comfort
Expect basic facilities, cold nights and long road days. The reward is access, not resort-style luxury.
A practical packing shortlist
- Warm layered clothing
- Personal medicines and prescriptions
- Sun protection and lip balm
- Reusable bottle and snacks
- Offline copies of ID and insurance
Entry rules, weather, access and supplier terms can change. We verify the current position for your dates before confirmation; this guide is planning context, not immigration or medical advice.
